We watched Bull Durham recently, and weren't all that impressed with the famous "I believe" speech. So c-h-e-e-s-y. But it got us thinking. What would our spiel be, if were we to sweet-talk a hot, young Susan Sarandon? Hmmm. No idea. Let's insert Ryan Gosling. We 'spose we'd say: “We believe in the sanctity of red lipstick. Of staying up 'til dawn every now and then. In playing hooky from work and sending flowers to friends. We believe in supporting our local economy. That there are no strangers. We believe that kindness counts every minute, every second, every day. We believe in entering contests expecting to win, and that macaroni-and-cheese can never be wrong. We believe in pigeon karma. In wishing on a star. And that to truly be happy and free, you must follow your whims. Trust your heart. Steer with your head. And remain (somewhat) virtuous…
In the words of Meredith Gray, we believe that knowing is better than wondering, waking is better than sleeping, and even the biggest failure, even the worst, beat the hell out of never trying.” Alright, we're cheeseballs. too. Love ya, Crash Davis |

Something for Everyone
We hate picky people. You know, the ones who won't eat anything with condiments (the sustenance of life) or red meat, and don't drink beer. Finding a brunch spot is harder than breaking outta prison, so imagine our delight to find a menu with so many choices. Now even the most complicated friend looks simple.
Enter Jerry's, a Division Street eatery with more than 100 sandwich and microbrew options. How it works: Select a sandwich, for example, the Spence M (bacon, PB, apple, basil and cranberry) or the “Jerry's Top 10” selection (we loved the Green J: roasted chicken, avocado, basil, provolone, and pesto), then, pair your delight with a choice of two scrumptious sides. We're talking mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, corn on-the-cob, pasta salad … the list goes on. For those who can't be satisfied with any one of the 100 picks, a seriously elaborate make-your-own sandwich is a fancy-pants solution.
Jerry's also rocks an outdoor patio, live music, supports emerging Chicago artists, and has a late-night menu 'til 2 am Wed.-Sat. That's satisfaction guaranteed!

Back to Basics
We love shopping and we love surprises, but the two together? Not so much. There's nothing worse than finding the perfect shirt only to discover it was a little too small for the girls or too short for the tummy.
Basic Boutique is an online emporium of classic clothing. They specialize in sleek closet staples by upcoming designers and old standbys. But will that cute skirt really look that cute on when you get it in the mail? Basic Boutique now offers a service that takes the surprises out of the process. Set up an appointment for yourself or with a couple of friends, give Basic Boutique some information on what you like and sizing, and they'll bring the clothes to your house so you can see and try on anything you like. For reals!
It takes the guesswork out of shopping risks, and can save a pretty penny or two—because hey, time is money. And we think this service is anything but basic, and certainly fashion-forward!

Scentual Seduction
Ever succumb to the fun of the magazine sample only to find you smell a little, well, stale later? We loathe feeling like we were just attacked with eau de trop (too much!) but we love to test out new perfumes. Solution? Head back to the source.
Violets? Got it. Sharper scents of Sweet Tobacco or Grapefruit? Yup, those too. But don't stop there, this long-standing Wicker Park Flower shop has delightful stems to choose from, but our favorite smells came from the different lotions and potions, perfumes and soaps they carry from faraway Florence and Paris. Asrai Garden is known for jaw-dropping floral arrangements that showcase one color in its many shades. Similarly, their soaps and perfumes make an art of singular yet simple scents, such as Carnation. A common flower but an expensive essential oil, carnation is delicately sweet and said to stimulate the imagination. We like that in a flower!
Stop into Asrai Garden to stimulate your senses, keep your eyes and nose open for new products at this scentual shop, and tell them Chicago Picks sent you!

Very Hollywood Street
Browsing the tabloids usually makes us feel envious, greedy, and five sizes too big. So obviously we keep reading them. We're masochists like that.
Anyway, the typical Hollywood starlet is the same shrinky-dink size as our 13-year-old prepubescent cousin. But though we maintain the occasional hamburger and ice-cream diet, we can't deny that we track the low-key style of the L.A. scenesters. Grab a boho-glam beret or hippie leather-woven headband from Bleu Dame, and you'll be ready to shine at Lolla '08!

Vodka and Book, Check
Before embarking on a road trip we always hit up our local book purveyor to score a couple of good reads, because nothing beats lounging poolside and forgetting reality for awhile.
Our choice for this year's vacay? Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea, by stand-up comic Chelsea Handler. Whether she's feigning a honeymoon, or reflecting on the awkward moments of her youth, this book aims to please with its genuine honesty and hilarious reflections.

Sing it Sweet
Some of the best things happen by chance. We still remember the first time our hand swiped the cookie jar, and out came an Oreo. Or receiving our first kiss in a run-by last-minute end-of-recess moment.
One night we were sharing a giant potpie with our madre at an adorable cafe, when we had the fine fortune to experience this sultry smooth crooner. Check him out and let yourself melt in the moment!
