  CHICAGO PICKS
life + style in the Windy City
August 22nd , 2008

When it comes down to it, clichés almost always ring true—don’t they? For instance, last week was particularly long. It included but was not limited to: new job transitioning, a relationship meltdown, and a hospitalized friend. Not to mention, we moved into a new place. All of those things: not always easy to deal with. All those things: a heckuva lot easier with the help of some friends.

Yes, we get by with a little help from our friends. There is no grill-out, 90’s party, or concert that can’t cure a little case of The Overwhelmies. It’s just a nice thought to keep in mind, for the next time we start fussin’ over The Here and Now. Like, we’re not entirely moved in yet. Our shoes and clothes are in boxes. But alas, home is where the heart is. And ours is now snuggled right where we belong.

One Good Turn

We're longtime supporters of the phrase "one good turn deserves another." One good deed deserves another—we dig that. One good kiss deserves another—absolutely!

Following suit, certainly one good bar deserves another and so we welcome Logan Bar & Grill, a sister establishment to Northside Bar & Grill. The Damen locale has always treated us well and Logan definitely carries on the family tradition. Topping our list of reasons to go back is the rockin' service. Sure we're easily wooed by smiley servers, but the staff was so attentive, quick and friendly that we'd be regulars if it was a rundown shack serving nothing but fruit rollups. Fortunately this isn't the case as they boast a gorgeous atrium and a quality menu with faves like philly cheese steak and a ginormous serving of nachos. Plus the bloody mary was spicy and strong and well, a good bloody is truly the key to our hearts.

It must be true that one good visit deserves another and so you'll know where to find us this weekend...

What's Up Dog?

We've been a hardcore Chicagoan since before birth. Sure, we might complain about the winter and our struggling quarterback, but we'll also defend them 'till we're blue in the face (or the negative windchill makes us blue in the face).

Well you can imagine the shame we suffered bearing our deep dark secret—we'd never tried a Chicago style hot dog. What can we say? We're a bit wary of mustard and how the heck is that relish so green?! We decided to conquer our food fear and took meticulous care finding the right venue (choosing a partner to pop our proverbial cherry is no light decision). And so we gave it up to Murphy's Red Hots and it was, in a word... perfect. We jumped right in: Vienna all beef charbroiled dog, mustard, relish, onions, lettuce, cucumbers, pickles, tomatoes, sport peppers AND celery salt. We liked it, we really liked it! The crispy onion rings, delightful staff, and outdoor deck were also something to write home about.

Virgins—just do it. You're in good hands with Murph.

Dancing on Air

Like most kids, we dreamed of running away and joining the circus. But as we got older (and since we never quite got our splits while riding a pony), we turned to other, less flexible, career options. But every now and then, we dream again of flying through the air with the greatest of ease.

Which is why we're happy to have found Aloft Aerial. Their specialty is Cirque du Soleil style ribbon dancing and static trapeze. The troupe, which travels worldwide, also offer classes of all skill levels. They just moved into a new space, still under construction, with 25-foot high ceilings and the smell of chalk any former child gymnast will find comforting. They also offer a free newbie trapeze class on the second Saturday of every month, where you can learn how to properly sit, hang upside down, and stand on a trapeze.

A class at Aloft will be enough to make you feel like a circus performer, yet sore enough to make you glad you aren't one.

A Very Wise Grasshopper

Some things weren't made to be broken. Like hearts. Promises. Or computers. Yes, computers. Ours is quite old, but pretty much one of our best friends. Plus, it supplies limitless opportunities for online shopping. But it shorted recently!

It happened right as we were checking out a fabu shopping site (Grasshopperstore.com) that sells the most adorable baby gear. They have the most darling clothes, toys, art, and classic books. (Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, anyone?) Check 'em out online, 'specially if you have a handy dandy no-fail computer!

Carry On, Then

We are kinda obsessed with the Olympics, not just because it’s the cool thing to do right now, but also because it’s like watching real-life superheroes—which we may or may not pretend to be sometimes.

Let’s get serious though, She-Ra was a goddess. We also like to save the world one day at a time by using reusable grocery bags. Of course you already know this is the way to be these days. But, make sure to check out the uber-affordable and uber-colorful Ecologie Bags!
