  CHICAGO PICKS
life + style in the Windy City
December 19th, 2008

This past week we’ve scoured the streets for The Perfect Gifts. Like
searching for The World’s Best Cup of Coffee, it’s an uphill battle and a never-ending task! But we’re soldiers. We’re holiday warriors determined to bear good tidings of comfort and joy.  We’ve juggled holiday-card writing, the de rigueur Ugly Sweater parties, and the lovely caloric nightmare that is hot chocolate with peppermint sticks!

We will brave the cold with ruddy cheeks and frostbitten hair, and we will try to look good while doing it but secretly hope we see no one we know. We will splash through slushy ice and fight that famous Chicago wind. And when we’re done and it’s time to unwind, it’ll all be worth it. All the shopping at our favorite boutiques and unique hot-spots has come through for us, yet again. Here’s to wishing you a fabulous holiday season, safe and warm with those you love!

Clothing with Character

We dig preppy. Preppy-meets-rocker. Rocker-meets-Harajuku, etc. etc. To us, fashion is fun! Sure we’ve had the occasional bad dye job (Can you say maroon hair? Fugly.) and experimented with bad trends (Overall jumpers? Uh, tacky.) but as they say, variety is the spice of life.

Which is why Lenny and Me is the perfect boutique for us. Located in hipster-rich Wicker Park, Lenny and Me caters to those who aren't afraid of taking something old and remix it. From designer cocktail dresses to sashaying vintage coats, this store carries a wide variety that could make any girl’s heart flutter—no matter what her personal style may be. So we’ll skip the baby barrettes. Pass on the glitter eyeshadow. But we’ll dig into the unusual duds for ourselves and our friends this holiday season! Lenny and Me has loads of reasonably priced boots and shoes, and the same fab designer labels that Carrie Bradshaw dreamed about.

This is a place about finding something different from the rest, and embracing personal style. Stylists not included (or necessary)!

Shoe Gal

A girl can never have too many pairs of shoes, right? That’s definitely our philosophy. We’ve got shoes that got us through all walks of our crazy life. Like the gold stilettos that sent us flying down a flight of stairs after the Rihanna concert. Or the cute polka-dot rain boots we wore the day we spotted the man of our dreams, only to then have him disappear behind a bus that splashed us with cold rain water. Hmm, we’re beginning to see a pattern here.

Luckily, we can always grab a new pair of shoes to help us make better memories. And when we get the urge to start anew, we go to One Yellow Shoe, located in the heart of Old Town. This charming, garden-level shop has shoes from Dollhouse, Tao, Me Too, and Aerosoles, all at affordable prices. While you peruse and try on, you can also learn from Tammy, the charming owner, about the shoe sizes of old-school darling Marilyn Monroe and hometown diva Oprah Winfrey. (She has all kinds of Chicago culture goss!)

History, shoes, and fashion—it’s shoenista bliss!

Color Me Gray

Ever since “Project Runway” wrapped and Leanne won, we’ve been feeling a little down in the dumps. What will become of us without our beloved “make it work” encouragement from Tim Gunn? Or even that laugh Michael Kors gives off when critiquing the work of those oh-so-brave designers? We pray for its return every day—but until then, there is always Gray!

At Gray, you will find everything you need to survive—especially
if you need saucy duds by Tracy Reese, Testament, and
Luii. We were simply smitten with a dress by local designer Sophia Reyes, their shoe collection is just to die for, and Hudson rain boots and Miss Sixty soles had us dancing on our happy feet. On any given day you can’t go wrong: check out Markdown Mondays, Ten Percent Off Tuesdays, Happy Hump Day, Three for Thursdays, and Forty-Dollar Fridays! What more can a girl ask?

At Gray you will never be judged on whether you’re in or you’re out—you’ll just know you’re in… because we told you so!

That's a Wrap

Sometimes we long to move somewhere warm. A place where it's sunny most of the time and we have to apply sunscreen daily and drink iced tea to stay cool; but then we wouldn't get to snuggle up in amazing scarves like those from Yokoo every day.

We’ve had Yokoo’s wonderful creations bookmarked since summer, and now that it’s finally cold enough to wear a scarf without looking like a complete looney, we’re tempted. We hope to get one before these 8-degree days disappear!

Under My ’Brella

Boots have always been our winter go-to. Frankly, it’s about functionality. But what about pumps? What about our rows and rows of fabulous pumps?!?

Finally, we don’t have to let them suffer, because we just found a fun and funky product known as Shuella. It’s literally a “shoe umbrella” created by Rebecca Miller, a Chi-town native. They’re small enough to carry in your purse or briefcase—perfect for the city girl-on-the-go in our lovely inclement weather!

We’re So Vain

We secretly love scoring cool and unusual goodies that leave our friends and houseguests oohing and aahing. We’re just suckers for the extra adoration—a little self-absorbed, we know—so it was no wonder that we swooped up all three of the cool spiky bowls we spied from Tilde.

Hand-thrown and textured from white earthenware and glazed with vibrant colors, these eye-catching bowls will add a chic and modern twist to any tabletop they grace.
