June 12th, 2009
We’re eating bland burritos (read: cheap and filling) and chillin’ with Netflix on the weekends. We have become sleep-deprived moonlight writers, sucking down coffee and living on dreams. The quintessential starving artists. It sounds romantic to live on a shoestring budget, but it requires an, um, new mentality. We will not fuss over materialistic items, we are freed from commercialism! We will be happy over the smallest joys! We are Zen-like and good-natured, jovial and on our way to a ramen-noodle-induced coma! And therein lies the problem.
We miss sushi. Champagne. And the option of blowing a paycheck on studded, platform Jimmy Choos. Pause. Insert inner hippie here. Zen. Buddha. Keep head down while walking past the new Barney’s. Up intake of Three Buck Chuck, stat. Increase hot-dog cookouts by best hot-dog cooker we know, our friend Howie. Last but not least, keep taking chances. This is how our twenties are supposed to go, right?
We can see Marc Jacobs at the end of the tunnel… and he’s softly (and non-creepily) calling our name. |

Our New Angel
With all of the latest hubbub over Dan Brown’s scandalous movies (secret codes, religious controversy and historical questions) we decided to establish our own code of conduct. To be eternally hot (i.e. wear outfits that pop and sizzle) without breaking our piggy bank (sophisticated, we know).
Lucky for us we found Definition, the answer to our new practical fashion strategy. Like a hidden gem (complete with sparkling chandeliers, purple-colored walls, and Fleur de Lis wallpaper), Definition transports us to the land of affordable couture. We discovered Kasil customer tailored jean in styles appropriately labeled “Democracy,” “Devoted,” and “Vixen.” We coveted the KHD signature blouses and off-the-shoulder dresses (perfect for work and play) and thanked the heavens for discovering the silk Wish glamour gowns complete with Asian patterns, comfort and sass.
Definition has put us back on the path to spending salvation with most labels under $100! And now when you mention Chicago Picks you receive another 15% off!!! We’re certain our spending demons have vanished—Definition is our new angel.

Sweet State-Street Bliss
Inhale, exhale. Sometimes we forget to breathe running from work to Tarjay to the dry cleaners to our favorite bar around the corner to meet our friends. But how could we miss the offer of an “entire week of transformation” for just $40?
The spa at Exhale is offering this incredible package deal that includes unlimited core and yoga classes, 20% off select spa therapies, complimentary organic tea, 10% off retail purchases, and locker-room access. If you haven’t experienced this Chicago haven of paradise, honestly, you are missing out on the most beautiful secret! Consider it an investment in recession-proofing yourself. You’re literally contributing to your own overall happy and healthy longevity while obtaining a truly beautiful glow! We had the glorious pleasure of experiencing Exhale’s GRN facial. Our esthetician Sonia applied the facial which (we learned) was designed to combat the effects of environmental toxins and is completely eco-conscious (our inner hippie smiled).
Try the GRN facial, our pick for a fabulous exhale special: 25% off all Lift, Magic and Power facials. Check the website for details on these, and book yourself a trip to paradise in Chicago!

Billion Dollar Babe... for Less
Wedding season hits. Suddenly we are reminded that we are likely to run into a number of exes. Friends we haven’t seen in years. And yes, potential guy material (PGM). We have to look hot, but we need to save our money for the post-party too.
Where to turn? Newly opened Borrow a Dress Couture. BADC is a heckuva deal when it comes to fabulously chic and smartly cheap finds. At BADC, you can lease or buy your favorite designer dresses, clutches and outwear. Designers like Alexander McQueen, Vera Wang, Dolce and Gabbana, Marchesa, and more are available and at our (suddenly itching) fingertips. This is simply a brilliant shop, created by two best friends looking to satisfy the fashionable Chicago woman. It’s for the savvy socialite who wants to be up on the trends, but have some leftover bread and butter for her lifestyle.
BADC promises to end the battle between fashion and budget, and lift the fashion-obsessed to a new place in the glamosphere! To infinity—wearing Badgley Mischka!

Windows of the Soul
Lasik surgery ruined us. Instead of waking up with the early rays of a summer morning refreshed and thankful for being alive, we’ve got the hiss of a vampire and the need for some serious eye protection until our eyeballs adjust to daylight.
Even with bedhead and morning breath, we’re all about channeling our style muse Greta Garbo and giving her some Malibu-infused flavor flave. Our latest eye candy happens to be Sama’s Garbo frames by Badgley Mischka Eye Couture. We can’t seem to kick the Hollywood in our blood!

Bonjour, Ma Dame
We’re making a bold confession here—we can’t stand store-bought deodorant. It compromises our black ensembles with little gray armpit patches and once our pheromones adjust to it… talk about eau de cat pee!
So how do we combat stinky pits? By dousing them with Jean Paul Gaultier. Our new favorite is Ma Dame, comprised of summertime notes like orange zest, rose, musk and cedarwood. It’s feminine with a stud belt and five-inch heels—think biker chic paired with a floral frock.

What’s In a Name?
We tend to get fanatic about certain things—things like cupcakes, Louboutin stilettos and skinny jeans. Another thing we’re fanatic about? “Gossip Girl.” (What of it?) So when we ran across this t-shirt from The Names Brand, we had to investigate further.
Their shirts are the perfect way to show some original and fun love for your favorite peeps, from Hanson and the Rat Pack to Full House and the Golden Girls. Our personal fave: Kelly, Dylan, Brandon and Brenda. Old-school “90210,” baby. Represent!
