June 26th, 2009
Why is it so hard to take good, sound advice? Our mishaps have almost all (unfortunately) revolved around love and dating. Hearing “don’t fall for him” is pretty much the kiss of death. Wait, don’t fall? Telling us not to fall is an invitation to dive headfirst into the shallow end. And shallow it can be. Gorgeous and darkly mysterious. Seemingly unbalanced. Oh yeah, baby. Sign us up. Our heart beats to the drum of some ridiculous teenage love song. Insane. We’re no Sandy, but we’d for sure dig Danny. It’s so annoying to so obviously fulfill the cliché. The bad boy. The wild child. The Cullensonian façade rears its ugly head eventually, and our vampire dreams get crushed yet again. Baby steps toward a pre-werewolf Jacob Black is in order. Summer of vampire-chic love 2009 has begun! |

Shop Til’ We Drop
Winter clothes have made their way to the back of the closet (finally!) and we realize that last year’s summer clothes are, well… a little out of style for 2009. And we can’t have that—we have a reputation to keep up! We are the fashionable girl on the block, whether it be walking our pup in a flowy sundress, or making our way to the local coffeehouse for our morning java.
What better place to restock our summer side of the closet than Southport Avenue, where we always seem to run into the cutest clothes, and the best deals for our pocketbook! Plus, one of our favorite go-to boutiques is here and beckoning us with the sale signs in the floor to ceiling windows… Krista K Boutique. We can always find the best dresses, cutest tanks, and fresh and fun jewelry and handbags, as well as flirty scarves to funkify our hairstyles.
Don’t miss out on the loads of sale racks that currently have taken over the store (to our liking!) on brands like Ella Moss, Saint Grace, Mint Jodi Arnold, and many more. Stop in, and tell them Chicago Picks sent you!

We Like Our Sugar with Coffee & Cream
Ever heard that saying “Candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker?” Whoever said that was wrong, and also obviously immune to that terrific hot mess known as the common hangover. That’s right, we prefer candy to liquor—and we are grown-arse women.
Because the thing is, candy makes everything a heckuva lot better. Happier. Shinier. More colorful. We can talk about our love for sweet confections all the livelong day, but we think you should try Sarah’s Pastries for yourself instead! Owner Sarah Levy attended The French Pastry School downtown to prep for her dream of creating chocolate and other sweet fabulosities. (“Bachelorette” hottie Jen Scheft recently had a custom-made cake from this fabulous Chicago patisserie.) Think high-end, custom chocolates. Think six kinds of chocolate and dozens of mix-ins (yummy pistachio, coconut, mini-marshmallows, etc). Orders can be made online or in any number of Sarah’s area locations.
Check the website for more details, and (if you’re like us) enjoy keepin’ it innocent and old-school by candy indulging every once in a while.

Beach Bod Haven
The sun is shining with a vengeance! Getting dressed every day, the first place our minds wander is… bathing suits. Swimming pools. Sun-tanning. Afternoon cocktails…
We must prepare! Who is here to help us out on our quest for the perfect poolside get-up (not to mention the perfect pool-side bod)? Londo Mondo, in Lincoln Park. Because we knew about Londo Mondo before poolside crunch time, we had already perused their section of figure-flattering Hardtail workout pants and inline skates months ago (btw, many of these items are now on sale, on the store’s several 30% off sale racks!) Now it’s time for swimsuit-shopping… usually a “yikes” moment in our department, but this year we were prepared and ready!
With the help of the praise-giving sales girl (who doesn’t love hearing how great they look in a new bikini?) we were torn between the many choices of two-pieces, tankinis, and one-piece tanks from brands like Vitamin A, Becca, Ed Hardy and many more. With our hot summer bod, maybe we deserve them all…

Kiss Me, You Fool!
Remember back in high school when you and your boyfriend used to kiss for hours on end? For so long that your lips came away nearly raw, but always the perfect flushed, red hue? These days, when we’re lacking a beau to kiss, we use Korres Pomegranate Lip Butter instead.
With the right amount of shine and that ideal “I’ve-been-making-out” tint, it melts on your lips, making them incredibly soft and hydrated. Perfect for when we find someone worthy of smooching for hours on end.

A Bedside Read
We’re always on the hunt for visual eye-candy that steals us away from our day-to-day existence. We’re totally obsessed with the debut issue of All Things Ordinary, a photography ’zine that showcases individuals around the world.
Get a glimpse at how others exist in their everyday world and what their bedrooms really look like when no one else is around—unmade beds, clothes bulging out of the drawers, junk everywhere. It makes us think that maybe (just maybe) our boring life is glamorous… and beautiful, too.

Sock It Up
When we saw Chloe Sevigny at Coachella rocking ankle socks with a pair of orthopedic grandma sandals and a frilly dress right out of our senior-class yearbook (circa 1993), we couldn’t resist trying the look for ourselves.
Now we’re totally obsessed with Hansel from Basel silk ankle socks—pairing them with our favorite summertime fashion staples. Hansel’s socks have the right amount of sass and coolness to complete Chloe’s look, and they look great paired with thrift-store oxfords, a boyfriend button-down and denim cut-offs.
